TSA Tests Self Screening before flights.

TravelPulse.com Dec. 23

As part of its ongoing effort to increase efficiency, TSA is rolling out a new prototype for passenger self-service screening that can be used by PreCheck passengers.

The new system, which will first be launched at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas in January, allows passengers to navigate through screening with minimal to no assistance from transportation security officers.

“Like self-ordering kiosks at fast food and sit-down restaurants, self-service screening allows passengers in the Trusted Traveler Program to complete the security screening process on their own,” Screening at Speed Program Manager Dr. John Fortune said in a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Travelers will use the new passenger and carry-on screening system at individual consoles or screening lanes, Fortune explained. The new system will help reduce the number of pat-downs and bag inspections that need to be performed by security personnel, freeing security officers to address other tasks.

Transportation security staff from the airport have already been trained on how to operate the new system and help travelers navigate the high-tech self-service screening process.

5 Stunning Airports, 5 Spectacular views

BYJONATHAN E. HENDRY Simple flying Oct 2023

Taking off and landing are arguably the most exciting moments of any journey. While some of the experience depends on the flight crew and airline service, a significant part for many is the view. While many airports across the world offer incredible views, there are several that stand out for their exceptional panoramas.

1   Gibraltar International Airport

The Rock of Gibraltar has been a landmark for centuries. The 426 m (1,398 ft) promontory, along with its counterpart in Africa, marks the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea and features in myths such as the Labors of Hercules. Landing at the airport is a unique experience as it allows for views across both Europe and Africa and has been said to be turbulent, given the unusual wind conditions caused by the Rock.

2   London City Airport,

Land alongside the River Thames in the heart of the city.

London is one of the tourist capitals of the world and home to six international airports. While most Londoners will have a favorite airport for various reasons, London City Airport (LCY) frequently stands out as the most scenic and exciting gateway to the city. Set on the iconic River Thames, the airport is nestled alongside Canary Wharf's high rises and offers unparalleled views.

3    Salt Lake City

The Delta hub offers some stunning views.

Passengers flying Delta Air Lines in the Western United States are frequently routed through the carrier's hub at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Set near the valley's titular lake, all of the runways at the airport are aligned north to south and offer fantastic views of the Wasatch mountains to the east and the Oquirrh to the west and southwest. One of the most unique views is that of the lake itself. Utah's Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and offers travelers a view that many have compared to landing on a different planet.

4   Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont Airport

Visitors to Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) can experience some of the country's most famous landmarks before they even touch down. The approach into the Brazilian city's smaller domestic airport comes with stunning views of the beaches, Sugarloaf Mountain cable car, and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

5   Cape Town

Passengers visiting the South African city of Cape Town are in for a treat as they depart from or land at the third-busiest airport on the continent. Frequent flyers suggest sitting on the aircraft's right side for a fantastic view of the fabled Table Mountian. This iconic peak can sometimes be seen breaking through the clouds that cover the city on some landings in the city.
